Lake Ladoga is the biggest lake in Europe, which was rightfully called by our ancestors the Sea of Ladoga. Numerous bigger and smaller islands are scattered over the lake, making its seascape especially picturesque. One of such islands, and the most famous, is Valaam island.
The natural beauty of Valaam is unique: its stony bulk rises high above the water level. The glossy surface of many smaller inner lakes reflects mighty pine trees and multicolor mosses. The microclimate on the island is very favorable for health and gardening; no wonder that Orthodox monks chose to build there one of the best Russian Orthodox monasteries.
